Artwork Matching Labels

Portfolio Entry

One can accept to divide people according to age. Yet, it can create prejudice and make society less open to creativity.

The word “KIND” is spelled out in nails on a brown surface. The background is cluttered with paint splatters.

Establishing Context

As an artist, I explored how society divides people based on age. I was in a town where we spoke English and German. I discovered a box of large metal nails in an old workshop close to my studio. I placed these nails on the floor to form the words “k,” “i,” “n,” and “d”. This placement resulted in the word “kind”. In German, it means “child,” and in English, “category”. What does it mean to categorize people as “children”? Creating this artwork reminded me of children playing in the sand.
